Don Carlos L. Locsin Award
The Don Carlos L. Locsin Awards is given in honor and memory of Don Carlos L. Locsin, who was a co-founder and first president of PHILSUTECH.
Locsin's illustrious career started in Victorias Milling Company, Inc. (VMC), where he worked his way from a chemist in 1921 to become the President in 1955 and finally a Chairman of the Board in 1965
He initiated the the sugar firm's modernization through acquisition of the country's first automatic mill and diesel electric locomotives for cane transport. This was the first major step towards self-sufficiency through the in-house manufacture of mill rollers and the use of the industrial engineering techniques and computers for the productivity improvement.
With foresight, he was involved in diversification of pilot projects involving non-sugar crops, pulp and paper, and research on alphacellulose and rayon, even before World War II.
Started in FY 1991-92, the award has been conferred upon persons in sugar industry, who like Don Carlos, have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in sugar business management, sugar economics, education. scientific and technical research, development and innovation is sugar processing technology; and other very significant contribution towards the promotion of the interest and general well-being of the Philippine Sugar Industry.
